While messing around helping someone set up a BBS with a Telebit modem, we found out after hours of WASTED TIME that you need to break off pin 20 on a normal modem cable (RS-232 end), connect pin 5 to pin 20 (thus always enabling DTR) and then MUBBS will "talk" to the modem. DON'T DO THIS UNLESS YOU ARE ACTUALLY GOING TO SPEND YOUR WHOLE LIFE TRYING TO FIGURE THIS MODEM OUT!

Why the modem doesn't have a "ignore DTR" command, I really don't know. Every other modem I have seen will allow this!

We had to set S51 to 254 (S51=254) so that the STUPID MODEM would actually change baud rates if you changed your port speed.

Then we found that if you sent ATH0 to the modem, you COULDN'T change baud rates when the Mac's port speed changed. THIS IS A BUG IN THE MODEM SOFTWARE!! and the Telebit we were using was a NEW one! So they really screwed up and are still screwing up.

I have NEVER, EVER, *EVER* (even with HST's) seen a modem so screwed up and made so INCOMPATABLE as this one. Does Telebit really think it can go around "re writing" the book on modem communications? I know USR trys to do that sometime, but at least they made their "Hayes compatability" work correct.

After running into that, we decided to go with a standard 2400 modem on the system till he can get a different modem (he's returning the modem!).

The conclusion from MANY hours of wasted time:

TELEBIT'S SUCK!!!!

Don't even bother using one!

I MAY someday look at this problem again, but I really think Telebit should write proper software so that their modem is actually Hayes compatable like ALL THE OTHER MODEMS IN THE WORLD!
